Valley Con 2015… a huge success!
This year’s Valley Con, sponsored by the Pasadena Modelers Society, was a success of presidential proportions, as it was held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The 25th Anniversary contest was on Sunday, March 1, and Valley Con organizer George Creed announced that a record 669 models were entered into competition. Not only were there a lot of models in all the standard categories, but the quality of the models were off the charts as well. The only categories that seemed a little lacking were the ships and submarine categories. The Automotive categories were really strong, attributed to the connection that Valley Con now has with the Petersen Automotive Group. In fact, next year’s Valley Con will be held in the newly renovated Petersen Automotive Museum.
A number of IPMS/OC members attended this year’s Valley Con – President Sean Fallesen and Vice President Dave Frederick, along with Mark Glidden, Mark Deliduka, Gordon Zuther, Terry Baylor and Joe LoMusio. Sean took home a Second Place for his 1:200 scale Yamato. Mark Glidden took a First Place for his outstanding Gotha, which also won Best Multi-Engine Aircraft, and he also won a Second Place award for his Canadian ADATS in the Modern Armor category. Gordon took home two Third Place awards for his Dinosaur diorama “When hunters become prey,” and “Berlin Bear” Panzer Tank diorama. Terry Baylor scored a Third place in the Biplane category with his Nieuport 28.
In fact IPMS/OC swept the Biplane category with Mark’s Gotha IV, Joe LoMusio’s Second place with his FE2b, and Terry’s Third with the Nieuport 28. Joe LoMusio won a total of five awards, also winning First Place in 1:35 scale Armor with his St. Chamond French WWI Tank, a Second Place in Collections for his Tanks of the Great War (1:72 scale), a Third place for his Diorama Vignette of a Pfalz D.III and pilot “A Toast to the Aces”, and another Third Place for a 54mm figure of a Vietnam GI called “Hamburger Hill.”
Our friends from So Cal AMPS had a display table, as well ZOUKEI-MURA, Los Angeles Miniaturists and IPMS Las Vegas. The whole set up was topped off (literally) by being positioned underneath Ronald Reagan’s Air Force One. As a result of being in a museum, this contest benefitted from perhaps hundreds of people, the general public touring the RR Library, viewing all the models. While that made for some anxious moments as there were a lot of children getting a little too close to the models, it still was a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful hobby.
